European Parliament Campaign to Adopt Blue Blindfold

European Parliament Campaign to Adopt Blue Blindfold
On 3rd December, 2008 the European Parliament launched a campaign to have the Blue Blindfold concept against human trafficking adopted throughout the European Union. Trafficking of human beings for the purposes of labour and sexual exploitation is a heinous crime which has no place in Irish or European society. The 'Blue Blindfold' concept, initially developed by the United Kingdom, has as its message 'Don't close your eyes to Human Trafficking'. The blindfold represents the risk of people closing their eyes to indicators of human trafficking and being unaware of the crime going on around them.

The launch involved the display of campaign materials used by the participating countries to-date and Ireland was represented at the launch by staff of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit who displayed the literature from the Awareness Raising Campaign in October, 2008. To have the Blue Blindfold concept adopted throughout the EU, the signature of in excess of 400 members of Parliament were required.

This was not achieved. Consideration is being given to re-examining this issue.
